Sattal or Sat Tal, in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand is at an altitude of around 1,370m. It lies in the Lower Himalayan Range, nestled amidst forests of pine and oak and derives its name from seven interconnected freshwater lakes. It is famous for its rich biodiversity.
Blessed with an incredible diversity of birds, Uttarakhand is home to about 600+ species of birds that are found in India. It is the popular destination for birders from all over the world. Many birds are migratory indeed almost half the species that is present in the country India can be photographed in Uttarakhand only. Sattal, offers an unruffled environment with abundance of natural flora and fauna which brings in over 500 species of resident and migratory birds, over 500 species of butterflies and a variety of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects.
Another incredible Birding destination is Pangot is located about 15km from Nainital. The main attraction of Pangot are its birds; around 200 bird species have been recorded in this area. Many Himalayan species such as Himalayan griffon, blue-winged minla, spotted & slaty-backed forktail, rufous-bellied woodpecker, rufous-bellied niltava, khalij pheasant, variety of thrushes etc. have mase this heavenly place their home.
